Obituary

John J. David, age 91, of Swanton, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon May 22, 2012 at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania with his daughter, Karen by his side.  He was born on the family farm north of AI on January 18, 1921 to the late Vendell David and Emma (Makovics) David.  John also began working on the farm as a teenager pulling plows with horses. He married Janice Overmyer in 1945 and she preceded him in death on May 22, 2003.  In 1946 he stopped farming due to severe allergies and hay fever.  He then became a carpenter, building houses; including his own in 1957.  Besides house construction he also worked on covered bridges, on which one was pictured in the Toledo Blade a few years ago, when highlighting the covered bridges in the area.  Late in his career he worked on heavy construction projects.  John was an avid horseman.  He raised and bred standard horses.  John also raced several of his horses at area county fairs, Raceway Park and Northville, MI.  With help from his grandson in later years, it remained his main hobby until 6 years ago.  After retiring in 1986, John remained active for 20 years with his various interests, including gardening, building bird houses and taking pride in passing knowledge on to his grandson.  Only health problems forced him to slow down.  In addition to his parents and wife, Janice; John was preceded in death by his son, Allan J. David in 2004.  He is survived by his daughter, Karen P. David of Swanton; daughter-in-law, Mariet David of Swanton; grandson, Gregory A. David of Swanton, granddaughter, Breanne K. (Keith) Walters of AI; great grandchildren, Taylor and Joseph Walters; and his loyal canine companion, Mickey.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Barnes Funeral Chapel, 5825 St Hwy 109 in Delta. In honoring John's request, his body will be cremated and there will be no public services.  Those wishing an expression of sympathy are asked to consider contributions to the Ebeid Hospice, 5340 Harroun Rd., Sylvania, OH 43560 or the American Red Cross, Fulton County Chapter, P.O. Box 157, Wauseon, OH 43567 in John's memory.  Online condolences may be sent to the family through our website at www.barnesfuneralchapel.com.
