Maurice Lee Weaks, age 86, of Liberty Center, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at his home. He was born in Napoleon on June 14, 1925 to the late (Samuel) Lee Weaks and Lelah F. Myers. Maurice was a 1943 graduate of Liberty Center High School. After graduation he served honorably with the U.S Marines during WWII as a radar operator stationed at Pearl Harbor. On May 1, 1955 he married Arvis Spiess and she survives. Maurice raised strawberries for 35 years and worked at Campbell Soup from 1957-1988. Earlier he drilled wells for Dunbar Drilling; including agriculture wells and wells for the Ohio Turnpike and Indiana Turnpike. For many years he was a Boy Scout Leader with Liberty Center Troop #166. Maurice was a member of the Henry County Genealogy Society, Liberty Center VFW and American Legion, where he was a past commander. He was a member of the Shiloh Christian Union Church in Delta. Maurice took many mission trips through Shiloh Christian Union including, Mexico three times, Iowa and several times with Teen Missions to Florida. Maurice was active in the Men's Bible Study every Wednesday and was an avid reader of Western novels. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Arvis Weaks; children, Nathan (Lori) Weaks of Swanton; Margaret (Tom Blakney) Lindberg of Hungry Horse, Montana; Carmen (Greg) Ray of Napoleon; Mary (Mike) Granger of Davison, MI; Rev. Roger (Mary) Weaks of Waverly, OH and John (Kati) Weaks of Liberty Center; sister, Norma Kendall of Grand Rapids, OH; grandchildren, Lindsay, Evan, Ariel, Ronnie, Jessica, Ryan, Stephanie, David, Emily, Waverly and Cameron and great grandson, Taylor Lindberg. In addition to his parents, Maurice was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl, Myron "Mike" and Ivan Weaks, sister, Grace Wade; son-in-law, Fred Lindberg and grandson, Steve Lindberg. Friends and family will be received from 2-8 PM on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Barnes Funeral Chapel, 5825 St. Hwy. 109 in Delta. A funeral service for Maurice will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday at Shiloh Christian Union Church, 2100 Co. Rd. 5, in Delta. Pastor Chuck Whitmire will be officiating. Interment will follow at Young Cemetery in Liberty Center.
